The Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest Arctic sled dog breeds, developed by the Mahlemut Inuit people of Alaska to haul heavy freight across vast distances in extreme conditions. Built for endurance rather than speed, the Malamute is a powerful, athletic dog with tremendous stamina and a working heritage that runs deep in their character. They are affectionate, playful, and sociable — genuinely friendly with people of all ages. Malamutes are pack animals by nature and thrive on companionship. They are not naturally guard dogs — their friendly disposition extends to strangers as readily as to family. However, their independent streak and stubbornness can make training challenging.

How to Groom a Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute has a thick, coarse double coat that provides exceptional insulation in cold climates. They are heavy seasonal shedders, blowing their undercoat twice a year in dramatic quantities that will test any grooming regimen. During these moult periods, daily brushing with an undercoat rake and slicker brush is essential. Between moults, weekly brushing maintains coat health. Professional grooming every eight to ten weeks for a bath and de-shedding treatment is recommended. Their coat should never be clipped as it provides vital insulation and UV protection.
