The Azawakh is one of the most ancient and elegant sighthounds in the world, originating from the Sahel region of West Africa where they were prized by the Tuareg nomads as hunting dogs, guardians, and companions. Lean, fine-boned, and extraordinarily fast, the Azawakh is built for speed and endurance across harsh desert terrain. They are aloof, independent, and deeply loyal to their own family while remaining wary and reserved with strangers. They are not a breed for everyone β their primitive character, sensitivity, and independence require patient, understanding owners.

The Azawakh’s extremely short, fine coat is minimal maintenance. Weekly wiping with a damp cloth removes dust and loose hairs. Bathing every ten to twelve weeks is adequate. Their thin skin and lack of body fat means they are susceptible to cold and injury. Nails must be kept trimmed. Their prominent bones make them vulnerable to injury and this should be factored into all handling.
