The Basenji is one of the most ancient and unique dog breeds in the world, originating in central Africa where they have been used as hunting dogs for thousands of years. Often called the barkless dog, the Basenji does not produce a traditional bark but instead communicates through a distinctive yodel-like sound called a barroo. Their cat-like independence, intelligence, and cleanliness make them unlike virtually any other breed. Basenjis are curious, mischievous, and endlessly entertaining. They form strong bonds with their families but maintain the aloof independence of a breed that was never selectively bred for obedience.

How to Groom a Basenji
The Basenji’s short, fine coat is one of the lowest-maintenance in the dog world. They are fastidiously clean and groom themselves much like cats, rarely requiring a bath unless they have rolled in something unpleasant. Weekly wiping with a damp cloth or rubber grooming mitt removes loose hairs and keeps the coat gleaming. Professional grooming every ten to twelve weeks for a bath, nail clip, and ear clean is adequate. Their almond-shaped eyes should be checked regularly for discharge. Their nails grow quickly and should be kept short.
