Character

What is the Belgian Shepherd Malinois like?

The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd and has become the world’s premier working dog — used by police forces, military units, and search and rescue teams across the globe. Highly driven, extraordinarily intelligent, and possessing seemingly limitless energy, the Malinois is a dog of exceptional capability. They are not suitable as pets for most people — their drive and intensity require an extremely active, experienced owner who can provide the physical and mental outlet this breed demands. In the right hands, they are unmatched. In the wrong hands, they become seriously problematic.
Social Skills

Belgian Shepherd Malinois with Other Dogs

Malinois are intensely loyal to their handler while remaining appropriately suspicious of strangers. They can be dog-aggressive and dominant, particularly with same-sex dogs. Their prey drive is exceptional and must be managed at all times. They are not naturally suited to households with small children or other pets unless raised with them from puppyhood with careful management.
Grooming Guide

How to Groom a Belgian Shepherd Malinois

The Malinois’s short, dense coat is relatively low maintenance. Weekly brushing with a rubber mitt manages normal shedding. Professional grooming every eight to ten weeks for a bath, nail clip, and ear clean is adequate. They shed year-round with heavier seasonal moults. Their active lifestyle means paws should be checked regularly.
