What is the Cairn Terrier like?
The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of all terrier breeds, developed in the Scottish Highlands to bolt foxes, otters, and other vermin from the cairns β rocky outcroppings β that scatter the Highland landscape. They are spirited, alert, and full of terrier character. Perhaps best known as Toto in The Wizard of Oz, the Cairn is a hardy, independent, and immensely entertaining breed. They are affectionate with their families without being clinging, curious about everything, and seemingly fearless. They are adaptable to different living environments and active enough for outdoor families whilst being calm enough to enjoy a comfortable indoor life too.

Cairn Terriers are generally good-natured with people and can coexist with other dogs when properly socialised. Their terrier spirit means they will stand their ground if challenged, and they are not intimidated by larger dogs. Early socialisation with other dogs is important. They are typically good with children who understand appropriate interaction. Their strong hunting instinct means they are not reliable with small animals including cats, hamsters, and rabbits. They are alert dogs that will bark at unfamiliar sounds and make reasonable watchdogs. With strangers they are initially curious rather than immediately friendly.

How to Groom a Cairn Terrier
The Cairn Terrier’s harsh, wiry double coat requires hand stripping twice yearly to maintain the correct texture and weather-resistant properties. Clipping softens the coat and removes the natural oils that make it weather-resistant. Between hand stripping sessions, weekly brushing with a slicker brush keeps the coat tidy. Professional hand stripping every six months is the ideal approach for maintaining coat health. Their eyebrows and beard give them their characteristic expression and should be kept trimmed but not over-tidy. Their ears should be checked regularly and any excess hair removed.
