Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavaliers are among the most sociable of all dog breeds. They were developed specifically as companion animals, which means their social instincts are exceptional. They get along beautifully with other dogs of all sizes, cats, and most other animals. They are wonderful with children, elderly owners, and strangers — there is very little that unsettles a well-bred Cavalier. Their friendly, trusting nature does mean they are not natural guard dogs and are unlikely to be a deterrent to intruders. They can develop separation anxiety if left alone frequently, as they are deeply people-dependent. Multi-dog households suit them perfectly, as they enjoy canine company.

The Cavalier’s silky, flowing coat is one of their most beautiful features and requires consistent grooming to remain in top condition. Their medium-length coat does not typically require clipping but needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats forming, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits, and around the feathering on the legs, chest, and tail. Brushing three to four times per week with a pin brush followed by a comb is recommended. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks should include a thorough bath with conditioning treatment, blow dry, scissor trim of any straggly coat, nail clip, and ear clean. The Cavalier’s long, pendulous ears restrict airflow to the ear canal, making them highly susceptible to ear infections — weekly ear checks and cleaning are essential preventative care.
