Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels are generally sociable, friendly dogs that enjoy the company of both people and other dogs. They were bred to work in packs alongside other dogs in the field, which has resulted in a breed that is naturally cooperative and easy-going with other dogs. They are wonderful with children and tend to be gentle and playful. Early socialisation is important to ensure they grow up confident and well-rounded. Some Cockers, particularly those from show lines, can be sensitive and may find loud or boisterous environments stressful. Cockers from working lines may have a higher prey drive and need careful introduction to cats and small animals.

The Cocker Spaniel’s beautiful silky coat is undoubtedly their crowning glory but requires significant and consistent grooming to remain healthy and tangle-free. Their long, feathered coat on the legs, chest, belly, and ears is prone to matting if not brushed daily. Daily brushing with a slicker brush followed by a wide-tooth comb is essential, paying particular attention to behind the ears and in the armpits where mats form most easily. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks is vital and should include a full bath with conditioning treatment, blow dry, and scissor or clipper trim. Their long, pendulous ears are particularly prone to ear infections due to restricted airflow — weekly ear checks and cleaning are essential. Many Cocker owners have their dogs clipped short in the warmer months for easier maintenance.
