The Estrela Mountain Dog is one of Portugal’s oldest native breeds, developed in the Serra da Estrela mountains to guard flocks and homesteads against wolves and bears. A large, powerful, and naturally protective breed, they are calm and dignified with their family while alert and wary of strangers. Coming in both long and short coat varieties, the Estrela is an independent-minded guardian dog that has changed little from its ancient working form.
