What is the Flat Coated Retriever like?
The Flat Coated Retriever is the eternal optimist of the dog world β a breed that seems genuinely unaware that life could be anything other than wonderful. Developed in Britain in the 19th century as a dual-purpose retriever β equally adept on land and in water β the Flat Coat combines excellent working ability with an extraordinarily positive, joyful temperament. They are often described as the Peter Pan of retrievers, maintaining their puppy-like exuberance and enthusiasm throughout their lives β a quality that is utterly charming and occasionally exhausting in equal measure.

They are typically wonderful with other dogs, children, and strangers β their positive outlook extends to virtually everyone they meet. Their friendly nature makes them very poor guard dogs.

The Flat Coat’s dense, flat coat requires brushing two to three times per week to prevent tangles and manage shedding. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks for a thorough bath, blow dry, light trim, nail clip, and ear clean maintains coat health. Their pendulous ears are prone to infection β weekly checking and cleaning is essential. The feathering on their legs and tail should be kept tidy.
