What is the Galgo Español like?

The Galgo Español — or Spanish Greyhound — is one of Europe’s oldest sighthound breeds, with a history in the Iberian Peninsula stretching back over two thousand years. Similar in build to the Greyhound but typically more slender and with a longer head, the Galgo is primarily a racing and coursing dog in Spain. In recent years, growing awareness of Galgo welfare has led to many being rehomed in the UK through dedicated rescue organisations. They are gentle, sensitive, and affectionate dogs — calm indoors while capable of extraordinary speed in the field.
Social Skills

Galgo Español with Other Dogs

Galgo Españols are typically gentle and sociable — like most sighthounds, they generally get along well with other dogs, particularly other sighthounds. Their sensitivity and docile nature means they are rarely aggressive. Their prey drive is extreme — they will chase anything that moves at speed. A securely fenced garden is essential. They are affectionate with their family and gentle with older children.
Grooming Guide

How to Groom a Galgo Español

The short-coated Galgo is very low maintenance — weekly wiping with a damp cloth or rubber mitt. Rough-coated variety needs brushing two to three times weekly. Bathing every eight to ten weeks. Professional grooming for a bath, nail clip, and ear clean is adequate. Their thin coat and lean build mean they feel the cold and benefit from a coat in winter.
