Character
What is the Perdigueiro Português like?
The Perdigueiro Português — or Portuguese Pointer — is one of Portugal’s ancient hunting breeds, believed to be the ancestor of the English Pointer. A medium-sized, elegant pointing dog with a short, chestnut and white coat and a distinctive square head, they have been used to hunt partridge across the Portuguese countryside for centuries. They are enthusiastic, loyal, and affectionate dogs — devoted to their owner and characteristically people-focused. The KC recognises this breed as part of its broader gundog group.
Social Skills
Perdigueiro Português with Other Dogs
Perdigueiro Português are sociable and friendly — their cooperative gundog nature makes them good with other dogs and people. They are affectionate with their family and good with children. Their strong hunting drive means they need careful management around small animals. Early socialisation develops appropriate confidence and social responses.
Grooming Guide
How to Groom a Perdigueiro Português
The Perdigueiro’s short, dense coat is low maintenance. Weekly brushing with a rubber grooming mitt is all that is needed. Bathing every eight to ten weeks is adequate. Professional grooming for a bath, nail clip, and ear clean every eight to ten weeks maintains coat health. Their pendant ears should be checked weekly.
