What is the Whippet like?
The Whippet is one of Britain’s great treasures β an elegant, gentle, and deeply affectionate sighthound that combines the speed of a greyhound with the warmth and sensitivity of the finest companion dogs. Originally bred in the north of England for rabbit coursing and racing, Whippets are among the fastest dogs in the world relative to their size, capable of reaching speeds of up to 35mph. At home, however, they are the polar opposite of their track persona β calm, clean, quiet, and intensely loving. Whippets are extraordinarily sensitive dogs that thrive on human company and are happiest sleeping under a warm blanket alongside their owner. They are gentle, non-aggressive, and remarkably easy to live with.

Whippets are generally excellent with other dogs, particularly those of similar size and temperament. Their sighthound instinct means they may chase small, fast-moving animals, including small dogs, but in controlled environments they tend to be gentle and sociable. They are affectionate with strangers once they feel comfortable, though some can be initially reserved. Whippets are typically wonderful with older children who understand their sensitive nature. Their strong prey drive means introductions to cats and small animals require careful management, though many Whippets live happily with cats they have grown up with.

How to Groom a Whippet
The Whippet’s short, fine coat is one of the easiest to maintain. Weekly brushing with a rubber grooming mitt is all that is required to remove loose hairs and keep the coat looking healthy. Their thin skin means they are susceptible to cuts and scrapes, which should be monitored. Professional grooming every eight to ten weeks for a bath, nail clip, and ear clean is recommended. Whippets have very little body fat and their thin skin provides minimal insulation, so they feel the cold significantly β a dog coat is a practical necessity in colder months, not a fashion statement. Their nails should be kept short, and their teeth require regular attention as dental disease is relatively common in the breed.
